Jazz Band

The HBMS Knight Jazz Band will have its first performance at the NHBDA Jazz Clinic on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at Hollis-Brookline High School from 11:45am - 4:50pm. Notices will be sent home with your child, and can be found at the bottom of this page for download.

Mission Statement

The HBMS Jazz Band strives to educate students in the purely American art of Jazz through a “big-band” ensemble setting. Students will learn about balance, improvisation, and different types of jazz and ultimately display these skills through performance.

Jazz Band will rehearse every Wednesday from 4:30pm until 6:00 in Rm 202 (band room).

Please arrive early enough so that you are in your chair and ready to play at 4:30. Please be prepared with your folder, instrument, and music.

The only way that any musical ensemble can succeed and sound their best is if all its members are present to participate. Please let Ms. Nault know at least 24 hours in advance if you are not able to attend rehearsal. If a member does not show for three unexcused rehearsals, he/she will be asked to leave the ensemble. Please see student handbook regarding excused absences. Also, please be ready to pick your child up promptly at 6pm as they will be ready to go!

Too much homework is not an excuse for missed rehearsal. As a member of the ensemble, personal organization is essential in order to get homework done and be at rehearsals. Please plan around rehearsal time. Accepted excuses are illness, emergency or bereavement.

Students need to be eligible to be able to play in performances. Academic eligibility requires a student to be passing all classes and to demonstrate satisfactory conduct. This is important because Students will be representing HBMS at public events.

Curriculum is based upon the Bruce Pearson method currently used in class supplemented with selected pieces from standard big-band repertoire.
